Credentials Count in Los Angeles Sinus Surgery
As the founder of the Los Angeles Sinus Institute, I often field questions about how to choose a sinus surgeon. This is hardly surprising when you consider the state of available resources today: many of my patients find themselves stymied by conflicting claims and widely divergent pricing. What’s a person to do?
Unfortunately there are no fast and easy ways to compare Los Angeles sinus surgeons. Sites like Yelp can provide a thumbnail of patient satisfaction, but they may be short on details. How can you dig deeper to compare the actual skill level of various sinus surgeons without going to medical school yourself?
One of the simplest things I recommend is to look at each physician’s credentials. Medical degrees, residencies, certifications, fellowships, advanced training – all these can reveal a great deal about a sinus surgeon’s experience, as well as the esteem in which they are held in the medical community.
Medical schools, for instance, are generally grouped in a few different tiers. Start here for a quick look at these; plenty of similar sites exist across the Web. Absent any further information, it is probably wise to stick with a surgeon from one of these top-flight medical schools, although further information can be valuable as you continue into advanced training. Look for major board certifications, internships, residencies, and top administrative positions in your area of interest.
As you examine these data, I also recommend giving the credentials more weight as you advance through the years. After all, a surgeon who has risen from a fairly unremarkable medical school to a position in an elite residency program almost certainly possesses an uncommon work ethic and a passion for the field.
Finally, once you have completed this research, consider polling the doctors you already know for their opinions. Medical reputations are earned through expert care and successful outcomes, and most of the doctors in any community will have this kind of information at their fingertips.
Go ahead and speak with the sinus surgeons on your short list once you are down to a few final names. There is no substitute for actual contact when it comes to choosing a sinus surgeon you can trust.
